He earned his undergraduate degrees in physics and electrical engineering, and his PhD in applied physics from the University of Virginia. Following his academic pursuits, Dr. Berhanu worked as a staff scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before joining NASA as a Principal Investigator. He holds several patents and has pending patents in space and communication-related technologies. Dr. Berhanu has been acknowledged as one of the Photonics 100, "the industry’s most innovative people," for his contributions to photonics technologies, instruments, and devices that utilize light spectrums. Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Berhanu is dedicated to mentorship and empowering future innovators and leaders. He co-founded the Brighter Generation platform along with his wife Dr. Tsega Solomon, a program that educates youth in Ethiopia and East Africa by connecting them with diaspora and global volunteers. Ms. Yoko Shimada Lead Economic & Financial Evaluation, Center for Global Digital Health Innovation Yoko Shimada is a global health strategist and currently a Research Scientist at the Center for Global Digital Health Innovation at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She leads economic and financial evaluations of digital health and AI-enabled interventions across low- and middle-income countries, with a focus on strengthening primary health care systems and advancing universal health coverage. With over 20 years of experience spanning the World Bank, UNAIDS, WHO, the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), and other leading global health organizations, Ms. Shimada has advised governments and partners across Africa, Asia and the Middle East on digital transformation, health financing, and health system strengthening, including market-shaping work at CHAI designing public–private partnerships with global pharmaceutical and diagnostics companies.Her current work focuses on evaluating national-scale digital platforms, including electronic health insurance claims systems, and generating evidence on the cost-effectiveness and broader economic implications of digital and AI technologies in healthcare. Dr. Oshunluyi brings a strong nursing perspective to global conversations on AI, equity, and the future of healthcare education in Africa and beyond. Dr. Berhanu Alemayehu Assistant Professor of Professional Practice at the Rutgers Business School Dr. Berhanu Alemayehu, DrPH is a health economist, applied statistician, and educator with over 20 years of experience in health economics, outcomes research, and advanced analytics. He currently serves as Assistant Professor of Professional Practice at Rutgers Business School, teaching Business Statistics and Enterprise Architecture. He has also taught statistics at Rutgers University, Baruch College (CUNY), Lansing Community College, and the University of Texas. ​ Dr. Alemayehu earned his doctorate in Health Economics and Health Policy from the University of Michigan and holds an MS in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Texas. In addition to his academic career, he has held senior leadership roles at Merck, AstraZeneca, Novo Nordisk, and Medco Health Solutions, leading teams and conducting clinical and real-world data analyses across multiple therapeutic areas. ​ His research has had national impact, including work cited in the 2012 U.S. Supreme Court Affordable Care Act decision. He combines rigorous analytical expertise with practical industry leadership to inform healthcare policy and decision-making. Dr. Kechi Achebe MD, MPH, Global Health & HIV expert Dr. Kechi Achebe is an experienced public health physician, scientist, and researcher, with more than 20 years of technical, programmatic, and leadership experience in public health and clinical medicine. A recognized global expert in the area of global health–especially HIV, tuberculosis and related diseases, she has worked and led the design and delivery of public health programs globally Dr. Achebe is the Director of the Office of Global Health and HIV (OGHH). In this role, she leads the development, policy direction, design and technical support of PC’s Global Health & HIV programs, to address malaria; maternal, newborn, and child health; HIV/AIDS; TB; reproductive health services, COVID-19 and other emerging global health threats; and community health systems strengthening, in the 64 countries where PC is present.. She also serves as PEPFAR Deputy Principal, representing Peace Corps to the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Health Diplomacy at State Department (S/GAC).
